Student reads PB: "The ego in him which thinks the 'I' must be rooted out. It
will be followed by the Overself, which neither thinks discursively nor
identifies itself with the outer person whom the world considers him to
be."(8.4.451)
AD: If the Overself wasn't identified with the ego then what would it be
identified with, if anything? It's capable of absolute impersonality.
S: You mean what content would it have?
AD: Yes. I don't know if the word "identified" but what would it be associated
with?
S: That would be the metaphysical wanderer, wouldn't it?
(Quote reread.)
AD: It doesn't identify itself with the outer person then what would its point
of view be?
S: It would be universal?
AD: It would be the World Idea. Sure, that's why it's capable of absolute
impersonality. Your Overself is not identified with your ego because that would
be discursiveness, so what is its functioning? That's why the sage is absolutely
impersonal. He's not identified except with the World Idea.
