While attachment to the I-thought makes it seem that the “I” is a continuous presence, in truth it is discontinuous. The I-thought comes and goes, like all thought, all experience. It seems to be here, then it not here. There are many gaps when the I-thought is not here—in sleep, whenever we are fully engaged in experience—and in those gaps there is nobody home. If we give attention to the silent gaps between the thoughts, we would realize that identification is really strobe-like, on-off process that creates the appearance of a permanent entity. Ignoring the gaps and connecting the dots creates a purely mental picture of something that has no enduring existence.
