' Who Am I ?'...

The question 'Who am I?' is not really meant to get an answer, the question 'Who am I?' is meant to dissolve the questioner................... Ramana Maharshi

' Destiny '...

Each person comes into this world with a specific destiny--he has something to fulfill, some message has to be delivered, some work has to be completed. ......................... You are not here accidentally--you are here meaningfully. There is a purpose behind you. The whole intends to do something through you............. Rajneesh

' Alone Together '...

Whenever you are alone, remind yourself that God has sent everyone else away so that there is only you and Him. ................. Rumi

' The Second Birth '...

Those who believe in the Short Path of sudden attainment, such as the sectarian following of Ramana Maharshi and the koan-puzzled intellectuals of Zen Buddhism, confuse the first flash of insight which unsettles everything so gloriously with the last flash which settles everything even more gloriously. ....................................................... The disciple who wants something for nothing, who hopes to get to the goal without being kept busy with arduous travels to the very end, will not get it. He has to move from one point of view to a higher, from many a struggle with weaknesses to their mastery. Then only, when he has done by himself what he should do, may he cease his efforts, be still, and await the influx of Grace. Then comes light and the second birth. ....................................................... — Notebooks Category 23: Advanced Contemplation > Chapter 2: Pitfalls and Limitations > # 65...Paul Brunton

' The Mystical Death '...

The truth of your own nature, the mystics all testify, is that you are nothing, which reveals that you are everything. In your deepest essence, you are identical with God or ultimate reality. Your real Life is the birthless and deathless Life of God, and the Life of God embraces the whole of creation. But as long as your identity is centered in the limited life of the ego, you cannot live in full consciousness of this Life. Thus, you must die to your self-centered life in order to awaken into the Life of God. ............................. As Rumi says, “You want Reality unmasked? Choose death! Not the death that drags you to the tomb—the death that is a transmutation, so you at last change into the Light” (Rumi, Odes). Or, as Jesus says, “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it” (Matt. 16:25-26). Thus, the genuine mystic lives in and as God only insofar as the life in and as the ego is dead. .............................. It is the ego’s delusion of grandeur that imagines you can escape suffering and attain immortality, when in fact your life centered in the ego must be completely sacrificed in the mystical death. Any teacher or teaching that is not clear about this just feeds the ego’s propensity for megalomania and self-deception. The genuine mystical path involves the perpetual surrender and sacrifice of all self-centered egoistic activity, up to and including the complete sacrifice of ego-centered life itself. Thus all genuine mysticism teaches the cultivation of selflessness, love, and compassion........from integralscience.org

One sometimes finds what one is not looking for. ' Refinement '...

Whether it be in the forms of art, music, poetry, literature, or those of living, dress, behaviour, manners, or speech, the quality of a person reveals himself in his coarseness or refinement. By that I mean whether he is or is not on the quest which is after all an attempt to refine ourselves from materialism to spirituality and therefore from low quality thoughts and feelings to higher and nobler ones. ................. — Notebooks Category 6: Emotions and Ethics > Chapter 5: Spiritual Refinement > # 200........Paul Brunton

' Losing the Ego '...

I remember the first time I had this astonishing experience. I was fond of disappearing from London whenever the weather allowed and wandering alongside the river Thames in its more picturesque country parts. If the day was sunny I would stretch my feet out, lie down in the grass, pull out notebook and pen from my pocket--knowing that thoughts would eventually arise that would have for me an instructive or even revelatory nature, apart from those ordinary ones which were merely expressive. ................................... One day, while I was waiting for these thoughts to arise, I lost the feeling that I was there at all. I seemed to dissolve and vanish from that place, but not from consciousness. Something was there, a presence, certainly not me, but I was fully aware of it. It seemed to be something of the highest importance, the only thing that mattered. ..................................... After a few minutes I came back, discovered myself in time and space again; but a great peace had touched me and a very benevolent feeling was still with me. I looked at the trees, the shrubs, the flowers, and the grass and felt a tremendous sympathy with them and then and then when I thought of other persons a tremendous benevolence towards them. ..........Paul Brunton

' Right and Wrong '...

If you punish a child for being naughty, and reward him for being good, he will do right merely for the sake of the reward; and when he goes out into the world and finds that goodness is not always rewarded, nor wickedness always punished, he will grow into a man who only thinks about how he may get on in the world, and does right or wrong according as he finds advantage to himself. ...........Immanuel Kant

' God Is Realised '...

"There are three different paths to reach the ideal, the path of 'I', the path of 'Thou', and the path of 'Thou and I'. According to the first, all that is, has been, or ever will be, is I myself. In other words, 'I am, I was, and I shall be, to all eternity.' According to the second, 'Thou art, O Lord, and all is Thine.' And according to the third, 'Thou art the Lord, and I am Thy servant or Thy son.' In the perfection of any one of these three, God is realised."................ Sri Ramakrishna _Teachings of Sri Ramakrishna_ Calcutta: Advaita Ashram, 1997, p. 31

' Consciousness '...

Before the world was, consciousness was. In consciousness it comes into being, in consciousness it lasts and into pure consciousness it dissolves. At the root of everything, is the feeling 'I am'. The state of mind: 'there is a world' is secondary, for to be, I do not need the world, the world needs me. .............-Nisargadatta Maharaj

' single mental ground '...

The student must for minutes deliberately recall himself from the external multitude of things to their single mental ground in himself. He must remind himself that although he sees everything as an objective picture, this picture is inseparable from his own mind. He has to transcend the world-idea within himself not by trying to blot it out but by thoroughly comprehending its mentalist character. He must temporarily become an onlooker, detached in spirit but just as capable in action... — Notebooks Category 23: Advanced Contemplation > Chapter 7: Contemplative Stillness > # 211 Paul Brunton

' Understanding Self '...

The problem lies within the definitions of self and non-self.. The first Reality is to acknowldge that You are not the false self called ego and that You are actually Divine Consciousness.. This is called Enlightenment and requires the surrender of egoic consciousness.. This is our natural state and contains no ego but does contain 'Personality'.. This 'Personality' is called God and is the source of manifestation.. This 'Personality' is Us.. The Final Reality is the state of Nothingness or what is called 'Pure Awareness'.. This is the Void of non-ego and non-Personality.. This is the place that some are speaking of.. This place is rarely achieved by humans while in the manifestations.. It is easier to surrender the 'Personality' of Divine Consciousness while within the state of 'Divine Consciousness'.. This is the "Crucifixion of Self".. The Ending of Separation.. Complete Freedom of Non-existence.. - thomas

' Happiness '...

Happiness... Happiness lies in thinking or doing that which one considers beautiful. Bowl of Saki, by Hazrat Inayat Khan Commentary by Pir-o-Murshid Inayat Khan: What is really good? The answer is, there is no such thing as good or evil. There is beauty. That which is beautiful, we call good. That which is ugly compared with the beautiful, we call evil: whether it is custom, idea, thought or action. This shows that this whole phenomenon of the universe is the phenomenon of beauty. Every soul has an inclination to admire beauty, to seek for beauty, to love beauty, and to develop beauty. Even God loves beauty. In all ages the various religions have given different standards of good and evil, calling them virtue and sin. The virtue of one nation has been the sin of another. The virtue of the latter is the sin of the former. Travel as we may through the world, or read the histories and traditions of nations as we may, we shall still find that what one calls evil, another calls good. That is why no one can succeed in making a universal standard for good and evil. The discrimination between good and evil is in man's soul. Every man can judge that for himself, because in every man is the sense of admiration of beauty. But he is not satisfied with what he does himself, he feels a discomfort, a disgust with his own efforts. There are many people who continue some weakness or some mistake, or who are intoxicated by some action which the world calls evil or which they themselves call evil, yet go on doing it. But a day comes when they also are disgusted. Then they wish for suicide. There is no more happiness for them. Happiness only lies in thinking or doing that which one considers beautiful. Such an act becomes a virtue or goodness. That goodness is beauty. Man is always seeking for beauty, and yet he is unaware of the treasure of beauty that is hidden in his own heart. He strives after it throughout his whole life. It is as if he was in pursuit of the horizon: the further he proceeds, the further the horizon seems to have moved away. For there are two aims: the one is real, and the other false. That which is false is momentary, transitory, and unreliable - wealth, power, fame, and position are all snatched from one hand by the other. ... Man wants something in life upon which he can rely; and this shows, whether he believes in a deity or not, that he is constantly seeking for God. He seeks for Him not knowing that he is seeking for God. Nevertheless, every soul is pursuing some reality, something to hold on to; trying to grasp something which will prove dependable, a beauty that cannot change and that one can always look upon as one's own, a beauty that one feels will last forever. And where can one find it? Within one's own heart. And it is the art of finding that beauty, of developing, improving, and spreading that beauty through life, allowing it to manifest before the inner and outer view, which one calls the art Happiness... ' Do Not Believe '...

Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.

Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many.

Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books.

Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.

Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations.

But after observation and analysis,

when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all,

then accept it and live up to it.

' The Size of the Ego '...

"As the eternal soul seeks evolution and experience, it encounters and inhabits the linear physical body.

As in all partnerships there is a a give and take between the energy.

The spiritual side often labeled as the soul has an agenda to perceive life lessons, pursue them and to make great strides to resolve them.

The physical form with ideas of its own, perceives the soul but then becomes very attached to the "me" of the moment...

Forgetting other lives in the identification of the self as it dwells in the current physical form.

It depends upon the evolution of the soul how much the ego plays into the plan of enrichment the soul has planned.

It is extremely difficult to separate the identification of the self when the soul is new to the idea of incarnation and the opportunity it offers.

Younger souls often completely embrace the current life as the one and only opportunity.

In doing so there can be a complete abandonment of eternal sight or a concentrated one that clings to the idea of salvation from one experience.

The idea of self within physical form is indeed a three dimensional process.

The size of an ego may vary but ultimately it is merely a singular reflection of your soul and the entity you came from.

The ego being finite becomes fearful without the soul's infinite perspective.

Religion plays upon this perspective so that the ego may follow a path of comfortable salvation, which indeed appeals to the eternal soul.

' The root of delusion '...

"The root of delusion comes from the mind And he who knows the inwardness of the mind Sees that the clear light within neither comes nor goes.

And when the mind that is deceived by the appearance of outward things Has discerned the nature of appearance, It knows that there is no distinction between appearance and the void.

Again when the mind discerns the nature of meditation It also discerns what is not meditation, And that there is no distinction between the two.

For distinctive thought is the root of delusion And such thought has never been of the ultimate truth."

The disequalibrium comes into harmony at the rate it comes into harmony.

You can't rip the skin off the snake. The snake must molt the skin.

That's the rate it happens.

Be Here Now

' Born Again '...

I truly understood what Jesus said, when He said that "You must
be born again" after I entered what the Buddhists
call "enlightenment"..

Many years ago, I decided to achieve
Mystical Union with Universal Mind (God) through deep meditation..

I
was determined to find out what Guatama found in his enlightenment
experience...so I went into the woods and began to meditate, nothing
happened for a while, and then I became completely serious and
offered up my own life to know enlightenment.

(and I was completely
serious).

Immediately, after I made this sacrifice of my ego and
life, I was knocked over by the force of the energy of Love..

I found
myself as light blended with light and knowledge flowing through my
consciousness..all the time being in an ocean of energy that we call
Love...

this was the most incredible experience of my life and
assured me that God is real, and Its' real name is Love..

After
this event , I returned to the body and felt as though, I had just
been born....this is the true meaning of "Being Born
Again"...

' The Second Birth '...

Those who believe in the Short Path of sudden attainment, such as
the sectarian following of Ramana Maharshi and the koan-puzzled
intellectuals of Zen Buddhism, confuse the first flash of insight
which unsettles everything so gloriously with the last flash which
settles everything even more gloriously.

The disciple who wants
something for nothing, who hopes to get to the goal without being kept
busy with arduous travels to the very end, will not get it.

He has to
move from one point of view to a higher, from many a struggle with
weaknesses to their mastery.

Then only, when he has done by himself
what he should do, may he cease his efforts, be still, and await the
influx of Grace.

Then comes light and the second birth.

' Does God Exist?'...

Does God exist? The only answer to this question would be:
God is all that exists. It is you and me (as separate entities)
who do not really exist. "I Am that I Am."

There can only be a mystical awareness of God that can never be
proved scientifically for the simple reason that any external or
indirect proof can only be something separate from That (Source)
which is proved. Any external proof could only be circular logic --
a dog chasing its own tail!

In a word, you cannot truly 'think' about God, because it is He who
is the thinker and the thinking. The fact of the matter is that there
is indeed a Reality that exists, but it cannot be reached. That
Reality can reach you.

Therefore, there is an extraordinary consistency in the assertions
of the mystics through all time and space. Their assertions were
totally in agreement with one another, however far apart they may be
in time, distance and culture. Reality can only be experienced.

' Unnamable '...

Many names have been placed on ‘This.’ We have called it “life,” “God,” “spirit,” “Oneness,” “enlightenment,” “presence,” “non-duality,” “awareness,” “Brahman,”, the “Tao,” and a host of others. Yet none of the names are that which they describe. All words are concepts. They are memory. No matter what word you use to describe life, the word is not it.

It is easy to become blinded by spiritual teachings, including non-dual pointers. The ideas are repeated so much that they become conditioning. Then we look at the present moment through the learned ideas, rather than through bare naked presence.

Life is not an idea. Be very clear about that. See that every pointer in this book or anywhere else is merely conditioning. It is some idea put forth to point you to a seeing beyond ideas.

A teacher or book can only use concepts to point you away from reliance on your memorized concepts. Can a concept see? No. It can only point to the pure seeing available through bare naked presence. This seeing is a knowing that is deeper than conceptual knowledge. This knowing reveals directly that to which the words “God,” “Brahman,” “enlightenment” and all the other words are pointing. There is no separate “I” who knows or finds “enlightenment” or “God.” Those are concepts giving rise to illusory separation. There is only this unnamable knowing. No subject. No object. Just ‘This.’

' The desires of possession '...

To live a pure unselfish life,

one must count nothing as one's own in
the midst of abundance.

-Gautama the Buddha

' Beyond Non-Duality '...

Of course, there is Only Source, but most non-duality only teaches of reaching the First Level of Reality called Divine Consciousness..

This is the place of Creator God containing a Personality in which our personality of Creator has merged..

We Realize that We are One with Creator but still feel a separate ego within this Creative Source..

Once this is Realized and this ego is surrendered,

the ego is dissolved into the Non-Personality of Pure Awareness..

' Paths to Truth '...

"Actually, all paths lead away from the truth..

How's that?

All paths.

There's no such thing as a path to the truth.

The truth's already here, where are you going?"

- Adyashanti

' Eternal Existence'...

Most souls, have a desire for eternal existence..

this is actually a
desire of the ego..

who is existing?..

personality...

you can choose any
personality..

If you wish to forever be the personality called God, then, You
will exist as Divine Consciousness, but, then,

You will still not experience the
Freedom of Non-Desire called the No-thing-ness of Pure Awareness ...

-thomas

' Ideas '...

For if you are caught up in ideas, then you will be caught up in the
self.

And even if you are caught up in ideas about nothingness, you
will still be caught up in the self.

That's why we should not get
attached to the belief that things either exist or do not exist.

This
is the hidden meaning when I say that my teachings are a raft to be
abandoned when you see true being.

' What Makes Ego Disappear ?'...

The method is actually simple..

You as higher Self watches the thoughts of Your
mind..

This is called being Awake..

As thoughts of ego arise, merely look at the
ego and the ego will disappear, as, it is not Real..

and All unreality will
disappear as the True Self becomes Predominant...

You are my face:

' Health Care in America '...

I have argued for years that we do not have a health care system in America.

We have a disease-management system - one that depends on ruinously expensive drugs and surgeries that treat health conditions after they manifest rather than giving our citizens simple diet, lifestyle and therapeutic tools to keep them healthy.

' Refinement '...

Whether it be in the forms of art, music, poetry, literature, or
those of living, dress, behaviour, manners, or speech, the quality of
a person reveals himself in his coarseness or refinement.

By that I
mean whether he is or is not on the quest which is after all an
attempt to refine ourselves from materialism to spirituality and
therefore from low quality thoughts and feelings to higher and nobler
ones.

' Only Love '...

What is sacred?

Of what is the spirit made?

What is worth living for and what is worth dying for?

The answer to each is the same.

Only love.

' Undermining Authority '...

' We Are Asleep! '...

Impossible to believe as we stare at this screen before us..

We awoke this morning from the nothingness and into the illusion of materiality..

All of this time, we firmly believe that we are awake in reality..

We pass through this day wondering why we are here..

Perhaps, instead of crying at our unknowing,

We should laugh at our ignorance..

As all of the Mystic Masters have told you,

" The answer is within"..

Within what?..

The Heart and Mind..

This is why you are here..

The mind will lead you to the 'Door'

The heart will open the 'Door'..

As the Nazarene said;

" Knock and the Door shall be opened"..

The mind is the ego that desires to exist but still seeks freedom..

The Heart is Divine Consciousness that offers freedom to the mind..

The mind is troubled by this decision between annihilation of it's existence and
the freedom that is promised by this sacrifice of existence..

Reality is beyond the mind (ego),

To view Reality, the mind (ego) must dissolve into nothingness...

Courage is the name given to those that fear and yet still proceed..

Are you Courageous?..

' Ennoble our Soul '...

There are ages of aristocracy and there are ages of democracy of all kinds, not only in regard to government but also in regard to religion.

There is however no doubt that the aristocratic form of religion has always been misused.

This happens when the religious authority turns religion into a means, an instrument to keep the people under a certain law for worldly purposes.

Then naturally that aristocracy breaks down and there comes a time of democracy.

And it is necessary that religious democracy should come, because it is in religious democracy that fulfillment of the religious ideal lies.

Religious democracy means that no one should ever think that he is human while someone else is divine and that God is in heaven, unattainable, imperceptible, and far away from his soul.

He must realize that divinity is in his soul, that God is within him, that his soul can expand because he is not different from God, nor is God different from him.

Only the danger of democracy is when it comes too soon, before a person is ripe, then it brings disaster; for man’s natural progress is to follow his highest ideal, but when he is blinded by the spirit of democracy he becomes so agitated that he wishes to break that ideal.

He comes down instead of going up....The main purpose of life is to ennoble our soul.
