Imagine yourself standing outside a fire station when sirens scream
and firemen clamber on to their engines. As a fireman dashes by you
ask, 'Where are you going?'

Responds the fireman, 'To a fire that happened ten years ago.'

You think you must be dreaming. Something is wrong.
Firemen do not race to fires that happened ten years ago.

Yet we behave just as strangely when responding with wild emotions
to events of ten or fifty years ago.

We must cut the cord of time which binds us to the past.
We must cut ourselves away from unconscious responses arising from
past defeats and sorrows.
