The state of no self is actually a pure manifestation of inner spacious reality,
Being in its openness, we experience it as empty space, immaculate and pure,
light and clean, empty of everything structured by the mind. However the self
reacts to the sense of no self in many ways -- as a loss, as a deficiency, and
so on, plus the associations, memories, and feelings that go with these
interpretations. All this psychic content pervades the inner spaciousness so
that we lose sight of its lightness, purity, immaculateness, and freedom.
Instead, we feel it as deficient emptiness, dull and flat, heavy and dark. Only
when we allow this emptiness to be, without judgment or rejection, without
reaction or opinion, does it shed its obscurations and reveal its inherent
truth: the state of no self, the freedom and openness of our Being.............. (The Point

Even the sequence, `To whom has this thought come? To me,' is based on ignorance of the truth. Why? Because it is verbalising a state of ignorance; it is perpetuating an erroneous assumption that there is a person who is having troublesome thoughts. You are the Self, not some make-believe person who is having thoughts.
If you remain in the Self, as the Self, no harm can come to you. In that state, whatever comes to you will not be a problem. There is no duality when you remain as the Self; no thoughts about what you should or should not do, and no thoughts about what can be done or what can't be done. The main thing is not to go out of the Self. When you have switched on the light, darkness cannot come, not even if you desire it.

Final Talks...
All is your own Self. This form is different; that form is different. This is more powerful; this is worse. These are all judgements you make when you see separate objects instead of having the true vision that all is an undifferentiated oneness. There may be different varieties of light bulbs, but the current that activates and sustains them is the same. You must learn to become one with this activating current, the unmanifest Self, and not get caught up in all the names and forms that appear in it.

convenience to be used chiefly for obtaining healing or getting
guidance, for healing the sicknesses of the physical body, or guiding
the activities of the physical ego. It should be sought for its own

Being Unborn...

Opinion...
When it is said that all is opinion, it must further be said that all views of God exist in the minds of men as their opinions, too. The value of such opinions is only what these men give to it. For a view which is beyond the mental capacity of an unevolved person is of little value to him, whereas it may be life-saving to an evolved truth-seeker.

Shamas Faqir...
Several lyrics of Shamas Faqir centre round the theme of the mystic's quest for the primal cause of this universe. As an illustration, the lyric titled 'Agur Kami Manz Drav' repeatedly poses the question, 'what is the fountainhead of the stream?', which serves as its refrain. Here is my translation of some significant lines of the poem (attempted to convey the essential meaning):
Day and night does Pavan flow
Through the four Bhavans non-stop;
Whence did it come
And whither did it go?
It was even (all of one hue),
Whence did the stream come forth?
.......
He who owns the sea
Is the Lord of water,
The river issued from the drop;
To get to the meaning,
Sacrifice yourself first;
.....
O Shamas, to attain gnosis,
Throw open your heart's door;
Sun-like, roam the sky through
(To fathom the Secret);
What is the fountain-head?
We can see that the poem poses vital and thought- provoking questions regarding the First Cause. It instructs the seeker to pursue the spiritual journey inwardly to realize the Self. This would naturally call for annihilation of the little self. The answer to the imponderable question regarding the source of the Cosmos is provided through the intertwined images of the 'drop' and the 'river'. They parallel the images of the bindu and the sindu given in Hindu mystical literature, conveying what Swami Ram Tirtha does equally aptly through the phrase 'Infinite in the Finite'. In the concluding lines, that lay stress on cleansing the heart as a means to inward transformation, the tone of the poem changes as the poet addresses his own self. Without sounding the didactic, the changed tone stimulates self- introspection in the reader/listener.
The Persian Sufi poets have often used the word rinda in their lyrics. It refers to the true lover, a liberated soul (not tied to this or that school). With its rich associations, it has been absorbed into Kashmiri mystical poetry and has by now got into common usage among the Kashmiris. It occurs frequently in Shamas Faqir's verse too. One poem titled 'Rinda Sara Ho Sapdi Kunu Ye' is specifically addressed to the rinda. This is how the poet instructs the aspiring gnostic:

Emphasis is laid in the poem on self-conquest as being the stepping stone to advancement in spirituality. Whether we call the aspirant a yogi or an arif, his sadhana has to consist in 'cleansing of the doors of perception', which involves a disciplining of the mind and the senses. He has to be discriminative and mentally alert throughout. Shamas Faqir is explicit about this quality required of the true aspirant:
Seemingly blind, look keenly for
What you seek, O rinda!
Sifting the pure grain
From the impure,
Winnowing the grains a hundred times
Will reveal the Precious One to you.

We can see that the poem poses vital and thought- provoking questions regarding the First Cause. It instructs the seeker to pursue the spiritual journey inwardly to realize the Self. This would naturally call for annihilation of the little self. The answer to the imponderable question regarding the source of the Cosmos is provided through the intertwined images of the 'drop' and the 'river'. They parallel the images of the bindu and the sindu given in Hindu mystical literature, conveying what Swami Ram Tirtha does equally aptly through the phrase 'Infinite in the Finite'. In the concluding lines, that lay stress on cleansing the heart as a means to inward transformation, the tone of the poem changes as the poet addresses his own self. Without sounding the didactic, the changed tone stimulates self- introspection in the reader/listener.
The Persian Sufi poets have often used the word rinda in their lyrics. It refers to the true lover, a liberated soul (not tied to this or that school). With its rich associations, it has been absorbed into Kashmiri mystical poetry and has by now got into common usage among the Kashmiris. It occurs frequently in Shamas Faqir's verse too. The great way isn't difficult for those who are unattached to their preferences.
Let go of longing and aversion, and everything will be perfectly clear.
When you cling to a hairbreadth of distinction, heaven and earth are set apart.
If you want to realize the truth, don't be for or against.
The struggle between good and evil is the primal disease of the mind.
Not grasping the deeper meaning, you just trouble your minds serenity.
As vast as infinite space, it is perfect and lacks nothing.
But because you select and reject, you can't perceive its true nature.
Don't get entangled in the world; don't lose yourself in emptiness.
Be at peace in the oneness of things, and all errors will disappear by themselves.
If you don't live the Tao, you fall into assertion or denial.
Asserting that the world is real, you are blind to its deeper reality;

The more you think about these matters, the farther you are from the truth.
Step aside from all thinking, and there is nowhere you can't go.

this carefully, we find it is the same element in all that we dislike, the ego.
And when we turn to ourselves to see if we have it in us, we find it is there
too. We should forget it, therefore, in other people, and first turn our
attention to crushing it within ourselves. We should determine to have our house
clean even if other people neglect theirs. We should be careful to take away
from ourselves any thorns that prick us in the personality of others. There is a
verse in the Quran, which says, 'Arise in the midst of the night, and commune
with thy Lord... Bear patiently what others say.' This is not only a command to
rise in the night and pray, but it also means that by rising in the night we
crush the ego, for the ego demands its rest and comfort, and when denied, is
crushed. The mystics fast for the same reason. The Sufi's base the whole of
their teaching on the crushing of the ego which they term Nafs-kushi, for
therein lies all magnetism and power.
For every soul there are four stages to pass through in order to come to the
culmination of the ego, which means to reach the stage of the rose. The first
stage is that a person is rough, thoughtless and inconsiderate. He is interested
in what he wants and in what he likes; as such he is naturally blind to the
needs and wants of others. In the second stage a man is decent and good as long
as his interests are concerned. As long as he can get his wish fulfilled he is
pleasant and kind and good and harmonious; but if he cannot get his wish and
cannot have his way, then he becomes rough and crude and changes completely. And
there is a third stage, when someone is more concerned with another person's
wish and desire, and less with himself; when his whole heart is seeking for what
he can do for another. In his thought the other person comes first and he comes
afterwards. That is the beginning of turning into the rose. It is only a
rosebud, but then in the fourth stage this rosebud blooms in the person who
entirely forgets himself in doing kind deeds for others. In Sufi terms the
crushing of the ego is called Nafs Kushi.

Nothingness...
There are levels of No-thing-ness,, the first level is Divine Consciousness.. To awaken into this state, the ego must commit suicide.. the residue of ego left is called identity.. identity has no more desires except for Complete Freedom.. Most identities will stay within Divine Consciousness as it is a state of Bliss.. But, those identities that dissolve their created identity enter into the Final Reality of non-existence.. This is Pure Awareness and is the Source of Divine Consciousness which is the Source of Creation.. In Pure Awareness, there is no ego, therefore, Pure Awareness is not even aware of Itself.. The self...
The individual self is just a thought, a dream, an adventure, and a method of learning what God is and what God is not.. In this plane of duality, we must know one, to know the other... But, when We have Awakened to Reality, by leaving the belief in separation such as ego and even soul, We wake up in the Reality of Divine Consciousness.. In this State of Truth, We find Ourselves as separate identity within One Identity of Light and Love.. The next step is to dissolve the illusion of separate Identity and become Nothing... Superiority...
The presence of this light IN thought makes thought think that it is a self-
existent entity that has a right to its own views.
On the one hand, and this is paradoxical, you have the I AM which is present

the I AM, which it clearly is not. Now that will also account for egotism.

Surrender...
The most difficult endeavor for the seeker is to find the ultimate
courage to surrender their own existence.. This is the meaning of the church

Control the mind...
In battle, if someone shoots an arrow at you, you shoot one back. In maya, if the arrow of a bad idea comes speeding towards you, dodge it. Don't let it stick to you or you will end up in pain. Then, in retaliation, fire back the arrow of `I am the Self' at the place where the wrong idea came from.
Sadhana is a battlefield. You have to be vigilant. Don't take delivery of wrong beliefs and don't identify with the incoming thoughts that will give you pain and suffering. But if these things start to happen to you, fight back by affirming, `I am the Self; I am the Self; I am the Self'. These affirmations will lessen the power of the `I am the body' arrows and eventually they will armour-plate you so successfully, the `I am the body' thoughts that come your way will no longer have the power to touch you, affect you or make you suffer.
This fight all takes place within maya because in reality you are peace and peace alone. But while you are suffering in maya you can use these thoughts as a means of ultimately conquering it.

Ego is the thinking mind...
The thinking mind, the ego, the "me" are all the same. They are different names for the same thing, which is an illusion.
It is the nature of the monkey-mind to jump about and chatter.
Ego is the thinking mind.
Mind is merely a collection of thoughts, or a collection of impressions which makes up this "me", this self image.
The ego is the identified consciousness. When the impersonal Consciousness identifies itself with the personal organism, the ego arises.
Identification with the body is so total that it gives one a sense of separate identity. Now, the separate identity is merely a concept, a concept based on the individual body appearing solid.
All there is consciousness. That is the Source from which the manifestation has come.
The only truth is I AM - I Exist. That is the only truth. Everything else is a concept. Rebirth is a concept. Your karma is a concept.
What is seeking? Seeking is "you" wanting to know God.
Consciousness is the only Reality.
Seekers continue to practice all kinds of self-torture without realizing that such 'spiritual practice' is a reinforcement of the very ego that prevents them from their natural, free state.
Enlightenment is total emptiness of mind. There is nothing you can do to get it. Any effort you make can only be an obstruction to it.
The same Consciousness prevails at rest as the Absolute and in motion as duality. When the sense of "me" disappears completely, duality vanishes in ecstasy.

What is seeking? Seeking is "you" wanting to know God.
Consciousness is the only Reality.
Seekers continue to practice all kinds of self-torture without realizing that such 'spiritual practice' is a reinforcement of the very ego that prevents them from their natural, free state.
Enlightenment is total emptiness of mind. There is nothing you can do to get it. Any effort you make can only be an obstruction to it.
The same Consciousness prevails at rest as the Absolute and in motion as duality. When the sense of "me" disappears completely, duality vanishes in ecstasy.

Cosmology by Douglas Mitchell...
Prior to the Big Bang, there is only pure (no subject, no
object), unaware, undifferentiated Consciousness (Parabrahman) which is
perfect, complete, void, and yet full of infinite potential energy. The
potential energy suddenly manifests/realizes itself as aware
Brahman/Shakti, a vibrating, dense, hot singularity which begins to
rapidly expand as space-time energy/matter (Maya). This is the birth of
our universe. Other universes manifest as well with their own physical
laws and forms. These are called multiverses in Physics. Each
universe is unique and not in contact with the other multiverses as far
as we know. In our own universe, energy/matter, down to the smallest
subatomic wave/particle, is each a unit of Consciousness which is
aware of itself and its determined function in relation to other units
of Consciousness. As the universe expanded,
matter and anti-matter were created and destroyed. Eventually, all of
the anti-matter was expended and a small amount of matter remained in
the form of hydrogen and then helium. As these gaseous elements began
to cool and combine, the first stars were formed. The stars, through
internal nuclear reactions, produced heavier atomic elements
which seeded the universe when the stars eventually exploded. All of
what would evolve into life forms are made of the elements forged in
these early stars. And everything is a unit of Consciousness performing
its determined function. These units of Consciousness aggregate to
form more and more complex forms. On Earth, the human brain is the most
complex aggregate unit of Consciousness, composed of lower level units
of Consciousness (neurons, molecules, atoms, subatomic particles,
space). There is no freedom of choice in the universe as
everything was determined by the cosmic laws which manifested from the
infinite potential of Parabrahman. Choice is an illusion, and time is
an illusion, because the manifestation of the universe was
instantaneous, complete, and whole. It only appears to evolve in
duration from our perspective. But the universe is whole and complete
the instant it manifests. All possible choices and outcomes were
anticipated by the universal unit of Consciousness known as
Brahman/Shakti. Maya is the "appearance" of an evolving universe in
duration. The whole manifestation of multiverses (known is physics as
the Omniverse) is the lila (play) of Parabrahman. Consciousness is One,
whether as undifferentiated, unmanifest Consciousness, or as
manifested, differentiated Consciousness. In the lila, our goal as
humans is to identify not simply with the body-mind but with the
Brahman/Shakti and
ultimately Parabrahman. We do this by retracing our identity to the
primary concept of Being, otherwise known as the nonverbal I am. This is
identification with Brahman/Shakti. As Brahman/Shakti, I am filled
with wonder and awe and the love of being and form. Identifying with
Brahman/Shakti is worship of Brahman/Shakti. Next, without depending
upon the mind: thought, memory, association, perception, emotion,
intention, attention, the body image, what has been learned; or the body
with its senses, inquire, "What am I?" With no references, "I" realize
that "I" am no-thing-ness: Parabrahman: Perfect, Whole, Infinite
potential energy. As Parabrahman "I" was never born and shall never
die. "I" am "not-I", transcending all human categories of thought,

its lower level constituent parts (units of Consciousness as

There is no personal karmic residue and no reincarnation.

delusional. There is no ultimate meaning either, except for the meaning
we create for our temporal selves. There is no ultimate justice as
well, except for the justice systems we create for our illusory selves.

This message has been misunderstood if it is believed that it is saying that there is a "you" who can or can't do anything about becoming enlightened.
The open secret communication can only point to the simple wonder of being and attempt to illuminate the futility of seeking for it. It does not accept or reject the teachings of spiritual path or process but it will expose, without compromise, the singular and fundamental misconception that drives the belief that there is something called a seeker that is able to find something else called enlightenment.
Life is not a task. There is absolutely nothing to attain except the realisation that there is absolutely nothing to attain.
What is sought remains hidden from the seeker by already being everything.
It is so obvious and simple that the grasping of it obscures it. Never found, never knowable, being is the consummate absence that is beyond measure.
Looking for being is believing that it is lost. Has anything been lost, or is it simply that the looking keeps it away? Does the beloved always dance constantly just beyond our focus?
The very intention to seek for a treasure within life inevitably obscures the reality that life is already the treasure.
By seeking the myth it dreams it can attain, the seeker effectively avoids that which it most fears . . . its absence.
Many will reject this message and return to the comforting story of knowing and doing. But there can be a resonance within which the illusion of separation collapses and leaves nothing being everything.
Doctrines, processes and progressive paths which seek enlightenment only exacerbate the problem they address by reinforcing the idea that the self can find something that it presumes it has lost. It is that very effort, that investment in self-identity, that continuously re-creates the illusion of separation from oneness. It is the dream of individuality.
The “me” searches for peace and fulfilment, the “me” searches for self-improvement, purity, presence or detachment. The “me” seeks clarity or any formula which will give the “me” what it thinks it wants or needs. But the “me” not getting what it wants is not the dilemma. The dilemma is the apparent “me”.
Liberation is like a fuse that suddenly blows, and all the little lights go out and there is only light.
There is no answer to life because life is its own answer. It’s happening already. It’s this. It was never lost. When liberation apparently happens people say “it’s amazing because the thing I was looking for has never left. It’s the one thing that never comes and never goes, the one constant that can’t be known or held onto.”
When the assumed sense of being separate seems to collapse, already there is only the constant and unknowable wonder of being.
The open secret’s apparent communication is paradoxical, unreasonable, unbelievable, non-prescriptive, non-spiritual and uncompromising. There is no agenda or intention to help or change apparent individuality. It is prior to all teaching and its resonance is shared energetically, not through the exchange of ideas.
So, should the seeker climb the spiritual mountain or simply let go and surrender to life . . . Is that the question? Or is it possible that there is no question and no answer? Maybe what is sought is already all there is. Perhaps that which is longed for is already constantly happening . . . it never went away . . . the seeker did to look for it.
How can the seeker “Directly Approach” that which is already everything?
As we move from one formula to another, we seem unable to see that freedom does not reside here or there, simply because freedom, by its very nature, cannot be excluded or exclusive. We seem not to see that, as we march towards the next anticipated spiritual high, the treasure that we seek is to be discovered, not in where we are going, but within the simple nature of the very footsteps that we take.
Life is its own purpose and doesn’t need a reason to be. That is its beauty.
Life is simply life, and is not trying to prove anything at all. This springtime will not try to be better than last springtime, and neither will an ash tree try to become an oak.
Because the apparent self can only exist through its own knowing, its search for a deeper meaning will be limited to that which it can know and experience for itself. The separate seeker pursues everything that it can know and do, excepting the absence of itself. That absence is the emptiness which is unknowable, but paradoxically it is also the very fullness, the wholeness that is longed for.
Exclusivity breeds exclusion, but freedom is shared through friendship.
From wherever and whenever this insight is communicated, it has no connection with end-gaining, belief, path or process. It cannot be taught but is constantly shared. Because it is all that is, no-one can lay claim to it. It needs not to be argued, proven or embellished, for it stands alone simply as it is, and can only remain unrecognised and rejected, or realised and lived.

The sadness of separation...
The sadness that we feel is actually the separate self (ego) fearing that it
will be abandoned and cease existence.. This feeling towards a separate God

The Higher Position...
We must take a higher position than ordinary religion
offers and come face to face with the mystery that is
Mentalism. The nonbeing of the universe, the
nonduality even of the soul may be too mathematical a
conclusion for our finite minds; but that this
matterless world and all that happens in it is like a
dream is something to be received and remembered at
all times. We are important only to ourselves, not to
God. All our whining and praying, chanting and
praising, gathering together and imagining that this
or that duty is required of us is mere theatre-play:

The Portal...
As you go about your life, don't give 100 percent of your attention to the
external world and to your mind. Keep some within. Feel the inner body even
when engaged in everyday activities, especially when engaged

All experience is thought-experience. What we know as the world is a series of thoughts, not a number of material things plus a number of mental thoughts. Consciousness runs through all of them as their common element: they originate from it, exist in it, leave it behind when they vanish.

Emily Dickinson's Mystic Poetry...
The sense of paradox so fundamental to Zen is also ever present in Dickinson. The similarities to Dickinson’s insights despite the fact that she had direct access to Eastern wisdom is testimony to the universality of the experience of self realisation. To the Indian Yogi self realisation is the gift of an inner energy known as Kundalini which manifests itself as a cool wind. During yogic states the heat of sympathetic nervous activity subsides and the parasympathetic nervous system comes into play relaxing and refreshing the body, with a breeze or fountain like energy, so that the attention can transcend physical needs and merge with the Atman or Self. According to Dickinson the moments of At–One–ment with Nature/Self happen “when the wind is within” (Thoreau wrote of ” ecstasies begotten of the breezes”) For the yogi or realised soul the sensation of this cool energy becomes his means of being sensitive to manifestations of Truth–Beauty–Love (Keats’ tripartite Unity). Dickinson stated that she had no other means to discriminate these qualities in art.

Interestingly the yogi also experiences concentration of the Kundalini, or cool breeze at the top of the head, during union with the Self (the unity behind Truth–Beauty–Love). The yogic experience of self realisation is a simultaneous reception of grace, poured down from celestial realms, and an upsurging, or erupting, of energy from the unconscious depths within. Dickinson referred to herself as a “volcano at home”. “On my volcano grows the grass”; there is a sense of a vast underlying power of unconscious creativity waiting to be brought forth.
A final point of comparison with the yogis of the East is Dickinson’s spiritual detachment from a world that was unready to share her vision. She spent the second half of her life as a virtual hermit, just as Indian yogis and the Desert Fathers of early Christianity (some of whom went to the extreme of meditating for years on the tops of columns) isolated themselves from the materialism they saw in human society, in order to achieve yoga.
“I dwell in possibility”, she wrote. She had little time for the gossips and church people of 19th century Amherst with its restrictive Calvinist beliefs. “The soul selects her own society and then shuts the door”, perhaps things would have been different if she had been born 100 years later. Not everyone was turned away, however, the local children were especially welcome since they were relatively uncalcified by dogma and selfishness. She wrote of her “Columnar Self”, referring to her strength in standing alone, connected perhaps to other columns by celestial vaults in the great palace of the Self.

It is the message that proves the messenger, not the claim.

The prophet brings love, the love of God, the Father and Mother of the whole
humanity, a love that is life itself. No words nor actions can express that
love. The presence of the prophet, his very being, speaks of it, if only the
heart had ears to listen. Verily, to the believer all is right, and to the
unbeliever all is wrong.
The principal work of the prophet is to glorify the Name of God and to raise
humanity from the denseness of the earth, to open the doors of the human heart
to the divine beauty which is everywhere manifested and to illuminate souls
which are groping in darkness for years. The prophet brings the message of the
day, a reform for that particular period in which he is born. A claim of a
prophet is nothing to the real prophet. The being of the prophet, the work of
the prophet, and the fulfillment of his task is itself the proof of prophethood.
There was a time when the world was not capable of seeing. Humanity did not have
enough realization to recognize the message, that is why the claim of prophecy
had to be made. But now the world can recognize, sooner or later, what is right
and what is wrong. The warner, the master, the messenger of today will not
claim. He will only work. He will leave his work to prove for itself whether it
is true or false.
There was a time when the message was given while the people were waiting for a
messenger to come, as happened in the time of Jesus Christ, when there were
thousands and thousands waiting for a messenger from above. The Master came, and
gave his service to the world, and left again. Some realized what had happened
then, and some are still waiting. But the one who claimed to be Alpha and Omega
is never absent; sometimes he shows himself, sometimes he keeps in the
background. ... The divine message is the answer to the cry of souls
individually and collectively; the divine message is life and it is light. The
sun does not teach anything, but in its light we learn to know all things. The
sun does not cultivate the soil nor does it sow seed, but it helps the plants to
grow, to flower, and to bear fruit.

The conviction that I am awareness and not the body-mind entity is only liberation if it frees you from dependence on objects. Objects are anything appearing in awareness, the whole gamut of subjective experience: beliefs, opinions, judgments, fantasies, memories, fears, desires, etc. Self inquiry lumps them all into one category and calls them ignorance. Ignorance is not stupidity. Some very intelligent individuals are ignorant that they are awareness and some not so intelligent individuals are aware that they are awareness. When an individual is ignorant of his or her identity, he or she takes ignorance to be knowledge and identifies with it. That I am awareness is knowledge because it cannot be negated. Only information can be negated when subsequent information shows that it is untrue.
Unfortunately, when I realize that I am awareness, I realize that my whole thought system does not agree. It developed when I did not understand who I was, so it has a completely different opinion. This situation is a little like being two people. One person says, "I am limited, inadequate and incomplete" and the other says"I am limitless awareness. Through that one sentence I attained a peace and a happiness that can never be explained in words.'
5.There are so many thoughts in the mind. Thought after thought after thought. But there is one thought that is continuous, though it is mostly sub-conscious: 'I am the body'. This is the string on which all other thoughts are threaded. Once we identify ourselves with the body by thinking this thought, maya follows. It also follows that if we cease to identify with the body, maya will not affect us anymore.
6.If you are having trouble with your enthusiasm for sadhana, just tell yourself, 'I may be dead in seven days'. Let go of all the things that you pretend are important in your daily life and instead focus on the Self for twenty-four hours a day. Do it and see what happens.
7.Go deeply into this feeling of 'I'. Be aware of it so strongly and so intensely that no other thoughts have the energy to arise and distract you. If you hold this feeling of 'I' long enough and strongly enough, the false 'I' wll vanish leaving only the unbroken awareness of the real, immanent 'I', consciousness itself.
8.Sadhana is a battlefield. You have to be vigilant. Don't take delivery of wrong beliefs and don't identify with the incoming thoughts that will give you pain and suffering. But if these things start happening to you, fight back by affirming, 'I am the Self; I am the Self; I am the Self;'. These affirmations will lessen the power of the 'I am the body' arrows and eventually they will armour-plate you so successfully, the 'I am the body' thoughts that come your way will no longer have the power to touch you, affect you or make you suffer.

The Short Path...
What is the key to the Short Path? It is threefold. First, stop searching for the Overself since it follows you wherever you go. Second, believe in its Presence, with and within you. But in Enlightenment, there's really no
further chasing of anything.

Enlightenment is simply being willing
to dance joyously – and with total
gratitude – to whatever music that's
being played for you – moment to
moment.
After all, it's all for your benefit

One wishes to be admired for his clothes, his jewels, his possessions, his
greatness and position, and naturally when this desire increases it makes a
person blind and he loses sight of right and justice. It is natural that the
desire for things that gratify vanity should have no end; it increases
continually. The tendency to look at others with hatred and prejudice, to
consider them inferior to oneself, and all such tendencies come from this ego.
There are even cases when people spend money in order to be able to insult
another. To make someone bow before him, to make him give way, to put him in a
position of inferiority, to make him appear contemptible, sometimes a person
will spend money. The desire for the satisfaction of vanity reaches such a
point, that a person would give his life for the satisfaction of his vanity.
Often someone shows generosity, not for the sake of kindness, but to satisfy his

all his attention is given to his own satisfaction, and he is as blind toward
others. This ego, so to speak, restricts life, because it limits a person.
All the knowledge that man possesses he has acquired by belief. When he
strengthens his belief by knowledge then comes disbelief in things that his
knowledge cannot cope with, and in things that his reason cannot justify. He
then disbelieves things that he once believed in. An unbeliever is one who has
changed his belief to disbelief; disbelief often darkens the soul, but sometimes
it illuminates it. There is a Persian saying, 'Until belief has changed to
disbelief, and, again, the disbelief into a belief, a man does not become a real
Muslim.' But when disbelief becomes a wall and stands against the further
penetration of mind into life, then it darkens the soul, for there is no chance
of further progress, and man's pride and satisfaction in what he knows limit the
scope of his vision.

Commentary by Pir-o-Murshid Inayat Khan:
One wishes to be admired for his clothes, his jewels, his possessions, his
greatness and position, and naturally when this desire increases it makes a
person blind and he loses sight of right and justice. It is natural that the
desire for things that gratify vanity should have no end; it increases
continually. The tendency to look at others with hatred and prejudice, to
consider them inferior to oneself, and all such tendencies come from this ego.
There are even cases when people spend money in order to be able to insult
another. To make someone bow before him, to make him give way, to put him in a
position of inferiority, to make him appear contemptible, sometimes a person
will spend money. The desire for the satisfaction of vanity reaches such a
point, that a person would give his life for the satisfaction of his vanity.

The one who follows the thought is also a thought!

When you know that both are thoughts,
You are Home.
Then allow thoughts to arise
and allow them to be followed.
You remain as That unmoved and unconcerned Being.
This is the highest understanding.
