"I am the eternal Beloved, drawing the infinite number of lovers to Myself in infinite ways. So they have experiences of innumerable types; they have to pass through endless stages. However, for the sake of intellectual understanding, these can be broadly divided into the following three stages:
"The first is the stone stage. One feels unconsciously drawn toward God or the God-Man. Here, the initiative is entirely with me. One feels attracted to me as a particle of iron to the magnet.
"The second is the worm stage. Herein the mind constantly wriggles like a worm. The person worships me, yet sometimes disbelieves me. He adores me; he distrust me! Doubts and devotion go together. The pull of love, however, prevails in the end. In this phase, various types of impressions are executed.
"The third is the dog stage. The dog has absolute faith in the master. He just moves with his master here, there, anywhere. In a sense, he has no will of his own. He only knows to follow the master without ifs and buts. Once a lover arrives at this stage, he is blessed."

Different terms can be used to label this unique attainment.
It is insight, awakening, enlightenment.
It is Being, Truth, Consciousness.

It is the Discovery of Timelessness.
All these words tell us something but they all fall short and do not tell us enough.
In fact they are only hints for farther they cannot go: it is not on their level at all since it is the Touch of the Untouchable.
But never mind; just play with such ideas if you care too.
Ruminate and move among them.
Put your heart as well as head into the game.
Who knows one day what may happen?

' Autumn '...
The fresh morning air being breathed into the lungs effortlessly, leaves falling from trees onto the driveway and the grass, a chilly wind blowing through the hair. Isn’t autumn beautiful? But isn’t the word “autumn” just another leaf falling from a tree, another temporary form arising and falling in ‘This’—the utter mystery we call life .
Enjoy the trees, the leaves, the driveway, the grass, the wind, the hair, and the thought “autumn.” These ‘things’ are coming and going. Nothing to hold onto, not even the word “mystery.” It arises and falls. Nothing is yours. “You” are just one of the forms arising and falling.
To a mind looking to hold onto these forms, what is being said here can be frightening. Actually, it is totally liberating. Each moment is totally fresh and new. The past is gone. Notice the mind’s tendency to hang onto some past moment. Notice its tendency to search for something in the future. The past and future are just thoughts, just leaves. There is nothing to grab onto. Nowhere to land.
Instead of grasping onto the temporary forms, ask yourself: What is here? What is it that is always looking at the coming and going? When a concept arises as if to answer that question, know that even that concept is coming and going. That is the mystery.

No.
All you have to do is remain still, that is all.
Remain quiet, still. Nothing to do. Nothing to become.
If you try to become something you get caught in the world of cause and effect and you will have all kinds of problems.
But if you've made the mind still and quiet then there is no-one to identify with anything and you become free.
You don't become free, you awaken to the freedom that you already are. Ponder this.

' The All-inclusive Self '...
Although the aspirant has now awakened to his witness-self, found his "soul," and thus lifted himself far above the mass of mankind, he has not yet accomplished the full task set him by life.
A further effort still awaits his hand. He has yet to realize that the witness-self is only a part of the All-self.
So his next task is to discover that he is not merely the witness of the rest of existence but essentially of one stuff with it.

Thus the ultramystic exercises are graded into two stages, the second being more advanced than the first.
The banishment of thoughts reveals the inner self whereas the reinstatement of thoughts without losing the newly gained consciousness reveals the All-inclusive universal self. The second feat is the harder.

' Immortality '...
The ego naturally fears the inevitability of death because it means its own destruction.
Yet deep down, man always knows with intuitive conviction that he is really immortal, and it is for this reason that he is always seeking, consciously or unconsciously, his true nature.
At a certain level of magnification the various cells of an organism appear to be engaged in a fierce and ruthless battle for individual survival.
Yet if the organism as a whole is observed at a different level of magnification, it is clearly seen that what appears as conflict at the lower level is indeed harmony at the higher level.
And so it is with the ceaseless flow of energy passing through infinitely diverse patterns, expressing the rhythm and unity of Life throughout the changing myriad's of forms in the manifest universe, for which the illusory individual ego has unnecessarily and mistakenly assumed the burden of concern.

' Are You Ready to Lose Your World? '...
There is a very famous poem written by the third patriarch of Zen, Seng-ts’an, called the Hsin-Hsin Ming, which translates as Verses in Faith Mind. In this poem Seng-ts’an writes these lines: “Do not seek the truth; only cease to cherish opinions.” This is a reversal of the way most people go about trying to realize absolute truth. Most people seek truth, but Seng-ts’an is saying not to seek truth. This sounds very strange indeed. How will you find truth if you don’t seek it? How will you find happiness if you do not seek it? How will you find God if you do not seek God? Everyone seems to be seeking something. In spirituality seeking is highly honored and respected, and here comes Seng-ts’an saying not to seek. ...
The task of any useful spiritual practice is therefore to dismantle cherishing the thoughts, opinions, and ideas that make up the false self, the self that is seeking. This is the true task of both meditation and inquiry. Through meditation we can come to see that the only thing that makes us suffer is our own mind. Sitting quietly reveals the mind to be nothing but conditioned thinking spontaneously arising within awareness. Through cherishing this thinking, through taking it to be real and relevant, we create internal images of self and others and the world. Then we live in these images as if they were real. To be caught within these images is to live in an illusory virtual reality.
Through observing the illusory nature of thought without resisting it, we can begin to question and inquire into the underlying belief structures that support it. These belief structures are what form our emotional attachments to the false self and the world our minds create.
This is why I sometimes ask people, “Are you ready to lose your world?” Because true awakening will not fit into the world as you imagine it or the self you imagine yourself to be. Reality is not something that you integrate into your personal view of things. Reality is life without your distorting stories, ideas, and beliefs. It is perfect unity free of all reference points, with nowhere to stand and nothing to grab hold of. It has never been spoken, never been written, never been imagined. It is not hidden, but in plain view. Cease to cherish opinions and it stands before your very eyes..

What you neglect, or, still better, ignore, begins to fade away or die by starvation.
When you give your attention to anything, you are building that thing into your Consciousness, for good or evil.
A wonderful story is told about William Penn. He had been accustomed from boyhood to carrying a sword at all times, because it was part of the dress of a gentleman at that period. One day it occurred to him that this was inconsistent with his Quakerism ; but on the other hand he knew that he would feel extremely embarrassed in going without it.
He consulted George Fox, never doubting that his leader would say, " It is a bad thing. You must stop wearing it."
George Fox, however did nothing of the kind, he was silent for a few moments, and then said , "Carry thy sword until thou canst no longer carry it."
A year or so later Penn felt that carrying it would be more embarrassing than going without it, and he discontinued to practice quite easily.
Do not tear away peoples crutches (or your own) . When they are no longer needed they will fall away. Dissolve the need.
Do not fight your rheumatism, or your debt, or your uncongenial job, or even your critical tongue ( if you have one ) but build health, prosperity , humor, into your consciousness and the unwanted things will disappear.

' Mental Deterioration in Lamas and Masters '..
I heard today that a very favorite Tibetan Lama teacher/master of mine is experiencing dementia from Alzheimers.
Many will be shocked because they don't understand how such a realized master could lose control of his mind, memory and clarity of awareness.
We somehow think "realization" makes one a superman or superwoman beyond all physical illnesses and brain diseases. We forget that Buddha taught "impermanence" regarding ALL phenomena.
A personality, an identity, a sense of personal selfhood are all temporary mental fluctuations arising within impersonal Empty Consciousness (Dharmakaya). There is no enduring person, personality, mind or soul that survives death intact. At death or severe brain injury or brain disease, the temporary assemblage of mental factors that define a person's individual selfhood fall apart forever. The mental individual is only a temporary assemblage of brain/mind activities and processes.
Our self is no more real and enduring than who we seem to be as the self identity experienced in a dream at night. Our daytime self is also just a projection of subconscious conditioning, memories, thoughts and imagination; all being projected from a much deeper source.
Our deepest Nature as the Ultimate Emptiness or Absolute Truth, Dharmakaya, is like a movie projector projecting our body, brain, self identity and world like a movie upon the screen of Consciousness itself, like a dense hologram (or reflections appearing in a mirror).
It's possible that suddenly the projector can cease projecting "our" virtual movie. In that moment all that remains is the Absolute Mind of the projector. This moment is called "rigpa" or gnosis, but the individual is fully absent in that moment. When "you" aren't, then You are.
So you see, no one at all has ever made it to Nirvana or realized enlightenment. How can a projected figure on the movie screen go home or anywhere when the movie projector is turned off, even if the star of the movie being projected, was starring in the temporary role of being a "great spiritual master"?

People are so anxious these days, because the message they get from the world is that things are totally out of control. So out of control that no one can fix it.
This is exactly the right message for now. Settle down and receive it. Breathe it into your heart: the world is out of your control.
When we stop freaking out, we will get the next message, which is, "So what?"
So what if everything is out of our control? Do you really want to control the world? Do you want an almighty leader to control the world? Which one?
Have you ever been in control? Are you in control right now? "Control is an illusion." That is the second message.
Finally, there's a third message for these times, one we can only accept when we surrender the illusion of control. The message is: "All we really have is our compassion, the brokenness of our heart."
We are here for compassion, not control: to love with every breath, to love with each small ordinary deed, even if the deed is merely listening.
You can spread the message of compassion. You must. The world is thirsting for it. You don't need to be a scientist, a politician, a guru, a social "activist," or a charismatic TED-talker. You only need to break open your heart and release the fragrance of love, in your own unique voice, your own royal gesture, the generosity you are. Breathe compassion.

Therefore, the process of realization is removal, not adding.
Removing this and removing that. Removing all concepts and all preconceived ideas. Removing all of your thoughts, no matter what kind of thoughts they are. Good thoughts, bad thoughts, they all must go. And what is left will be nothing, no-thing. You are that. You are that no-thing.
Doesn't it feel good to be nothing, instead of believing you are thoughts, and you are human, and you have a job to fulfill, and you have a mission?

A further result of this contemplation of the world as the great Void is that the work done by mentalistic study is advanced still further, for not only are the things experienced by the five senses seen to be only thoughts but the thoughts themselves are now seen to be the transient spume and spray flung out of seeming Emptiness.
Thus there is a complete reorientation from thoughts to Thought.
Instead of holding a single thought or scenes of ideas in perfect concentration, the practiser must now move away from all ideas altogether to that seeming emptiness in which they arise.
And the latter, of course, is the pure, passive, undifferentiated mind-stuff out of which the separate ideas are produced.
Here there is no knowing and discriminating between one idea and another, no stirring into consciousness of this and that, but rather a sublime vacancy.
For the Mind-essence is not something which we can picture to ourselves; it is utterly formless. It is as empty and as ungraspable as space.

The "self" in Buddhism
It's time to disentangle the Buddhist confusion regarding the soul or self. Most Buddhist masters and teachers, even the Dalai Lama stumble and stutter when asked about this topic.
The question is: "If there is no self-entity in Buddhism, then what reincarnates and can remember past incarnations?" The Buddha often spoke of his many past lives in perfect memory and detail.
The great Japanese Zen master Dogen Zenji, made very clear there is no soul or spiritual entity within our body or energy complex. But once when asked from a student what they should do after they die and are afraid in the after-death world, Dogen said at that time while in the after-life state, they should pray to the Buddha's for protection. What???
In Tibetan Buddhism there is a practice called "phowa" where one is trained on how one's "mental consciousness" (yid lus) should leave the body at death for a better after-death state and reincarnation. There are also full descriptions of what one needs to do before reincarnating in the next life. That indeed is a perfect description of a "soul". In In Tibetan Bon they are much less embarrassed by discussing such "soul" notions.
Dzogchen text translator and Dzogchen teacher Malcolm Smith wrote to me:
"...In fact, there is even a passage in Dzogchen RR ["Rigpa Rangshar" Tantra] that asserts it is ok to refer to vidya (rigpa) as a self...."
"...If we have to have a soul, it might as well be vidya (rigpa), it is after all, permanent, unconditioned, a knower, stainless, and free from the three realms. But If we don't have to have one, vidya (rigpa) still has these characteristics. It is our essenceless essence."
We need to understand that our consciousness has three simultaneous characteristics: emptiness like space, knowing clarity, and energetic formation. "Energetic formation" means we always have some level embodiment present. The energetic formation aspect is a "thigle" or sphere of pure awareness surrounded by various densities of life force or prana or chi. This is the "soul" or energetic self that reincarnates as a mental body (yid lus).
But here's the deal; Buddha pointed out that this "self" is empty. That means it is never a fixed, permanent entity of unchanging characteristics. In fact it is dependent upon upon memories, mind, perceptions, interdependent relationships and karmic energetic dynamics. So even though it survives death as consciousness, it's an ever changing identity and energetic continuum.
That is the only "who" that you are. Focus only on the energetic formation aspect, which includes its software of conceptualizing and reification of subjects("me") and objects, and you have localized karmic selfness. It is the energetic formation that gets entangled with a human brain and its brain chatter, at least until death or deep samadhi.
Focus on your empty knowing aspects of pure awareness and you experience vast and infinite Buddha Mind, the Mind of Clear Light, nirvana.
So, there is a "soul" in Buddhism, it's absurd to think otherwise. But the soul is empty, in constant flux, but an unending continuum of experiencing

Edward Muzika: Pierre Thériault, Experiences and knowing go hand in hand. But it is not a conceptual knowing. It is knowing that all so-called conceptual knowledge and ideas, including about one's own identities, are all add-ons to the fundamental feeling of being alive and existing.
When you abide in that original knowing, directly perceiving/feeling one's own self, resting there for a long bit, extraordinary experiences come along with a direct perceiving without the intermediary of mind or concepts.
With the subsidance of mentation, of mind, one then operates directly as a manifestation of universal consciousness. But even that is a concept and serves no one. Just trust to find oneself, and abide there, baking in that oven of self abidance until you arethoroughly cooked, or as Robert Adams said, you have become a hollow shel of your former existence.
As for extraordinary experiences, I post letters from students and others about their experiences mostly to inspire others to maintain or increase their intention and persistence towards abiding in the I Am sense, which becomes a recognition and abidance in Self.

' Don’t believe what ‘spiritual teachers’ say '...
There is ultimately no such thing as a spiritual teacher or spiritual seeker until thought arises to tell that story of separation. The mind projects thoughts onto reality. We call this a 'building,' that a 'teacher,' this a 'Republican,' and that 'enlightenment.' That is a dream of thought. Nothing wrong with it. No need to deny it. It’s beautiful. But separation isn't ultimately true.
Notice the tendency to believe what so-called teachers say. Enlightenment is not a belief. It is not an idea that you memorize and carry around like a belief in Santa Claus. If you believe what teachers are saying, you will likely miss what is being pointed to. There are many expressions of this inexpressible realization. Getting caught up in comparing and contrasting the messages only keeps the mind in the false notion that ‘This’ can be grasped intellectually. The words are pointing beyond adherence to the words, to the immediate experiencing of what you are and what life is beyond your ideas about that.
“You” are a set of past thoughts, beliefs, opinions, perspectives, and feelings to which awareness has attached. When that separate self is seen through, there is only ‘This’—a totally alive mystery. The portal to ‘This’ is now. In this moment, the past is seen to be nothing more than presently arising thought. There is no way to teach what is. All spiritual teachings are past thoughts. Second-hand knowledge.

Liberation in Buddhism is based on the realization of twofold emptiness;
that's the whole essence of liberation.
Emptiness is like seeing all factors of mind, awareness and energy areempty like clouds with no solid center and with no static duration. There is fundamentally nothing happening, but what "isn't happening" is vividly apparent as though happening, like a dream at night.
The first fold of emptiness insight is seeing there is no self, soul, mind or personal identity except what is fictionally believed; much like whoyou convincingly "seem" to be in a dream at night.
The second emptiness insight is seeing that everything that appears as objectively real, acquires its illusory status of existence purely from thoughts that say so. All phenomena "exist" only by virtue of their conceptual descriptions.
Seeing and directly knowing the empty, yet vivid nature of ALL subjective and objective phenomena, is what Nirvana is.
This isn't a gradual result, rather it's an "all at once" insight that sees the generic nature of ALL phenomena to be empty, without exception. It's the sudden, all-inclusive, all-pervasive nature of the emptiness insight that springs open the samsaric prison door by revealing no prisoners ever existed to be freed.

We must begin by distinguishing the three types. Let us take the musician first and indicate his temperamental equipment for the task.
The musician we may think of as being exceedingly quick to beauty, drawn in a very rapture to it: somewhat slow to stir of his own impulse, he answers at once to the outer stimulus: as the timid are sensitive to noise so he to tones and the beauty they convey; all that offends against unison or harmony in melodies or rhythms repels him; he longs for measure and shapely pattern.
This natural tendency must be made the starting-point to such a man; he must be drawn by the tone, rhythm, and design in things of sense: he must learn to distinguish the material forms from the Authentic-Existent which is the source of all these correspondences and of the entire reasoned scheme in the
work of art:
he must be led to the Beauty that manifests itself through these forms; he must be shown that what ravished him was no other than the Harmony of the Intellectual world and the Beauty in that sphere, not some one shape of beauty but the All-Beauty, the Absolute Beauty; and the truths of philosophy must be implanted in him to lead him to faith in that which, unknowing it, he possesses within himself. All this implies that matter is also a myth, unreal.
Still more it implies that the ego is a myth, illusory. Here, then, is the first practice of the ultimate path:
think constantly of that Mind which is producing the ego, all the other egos around, and all the world, in fact.
Keep this up until it becomes habitual.
The consequence is that one tends in time to regard his own ego with complete detachment, as though he were regarding somebody else.

Philosophy refuses to regard itself in an exclusive sense. It admits all labeled points of view. But it refuses to limit itself to any of them. For they deal with apparent truth. The point of view which deals with real truth is really no point of view at all.
The would-be philosopher should not feel bound by labels, categories, and other fences which people want to put on others simply because they themselves live quite willingly surrounded by such fences and cannot understand someone who refuses to do so. Philosophy is a path which ends in the pathless--a way to the inner freedom which comes with truth.
It would be difficult to put philosophy into any category of its own for it has links with everything and with nothing, with particular religions and with no religion at all, with particular metaphysical systems and with none, with the different theologies and creeds, and so on; it has no organization and no one founder or apostle.

Viewed from the standpoint of the house in which we all have to live--that is, the body--Advaita Vedanta seems to deal only in ultimate abstractions--however admirable and lofty its outlook.
The body is there and its actuality and factuality must be noted and, more, accepted. This is why I do not give any other label to the ideas put into my later books than the generic name philosophy. I do not call it Indian philosophy since there are ideas in the books which do not belong to India at all.
I do not identify it with any particular land, race, religion, or teacher from the ancient past or the modern present. Philosophy cannot be limited only to abstract ideas. It includes those ideas but it also includes other things. Its original Greek meaning, "love of wisdom," concerns the whole of man, and not only his abstract thoughts, intellect, feelings, body, or relation to the world around him.
It concerns his entire life: his contacts with other people, the morality which guides him in dealing with them, and finally his attitude towards himself. Philosophy must be universal in its scope; therefore, it may embrace ideas which originate not only in India or in America or in Europe, but in every other period of civilization. Not all ideas are philosophical, but only those which are true, useful, in harmony with the World-Idea, and able to survive the test of practice and applicability.

How do you understand anything?
Any knowledge of any kind that you think you have can only be in the consciousness.
How can the consciousness, which came later, give you any knowledge about that state which exists prior to its arrival?

Whatever happens in consciousness is purely imaginary, an hallucination; therefore, keep in mind the knowledge that it is consciousness in which everything is happening.
With that knowledge, be still, do not pursue any other thoughts which arise in consciousness.
What is necessary is to understand with sure conviction is that all is temporary, and does not reflect your true state.

We must get our minds quite clear about this position. It is all a matter of standpoint. From a practical standpoint the world is composed of many entities affecting and inter-reacting with each other in a causal manner. From the ultimate standpoint the world is Mind-essence, and this being the only existence cannot change its nature and come into a second birth; it cannot fall into the duality of cause and effect. But the Mind's finite productions, ideas, can do so.
Therefore it is admitted that causality fully reigns in the realm of ordinary experience. But when we seek to understand Mind in itself we seek to transcend ordinary experience. Mind in itself is not subject to causality.
The question of causality depends, like the question of the universe, on the particular point of view which we take up. It is real when considered as pertaining to two things, just as a dream table and chairs are real when considered by the dreamer himself. It is fictitious when we look not at the multiplicity of things but at the essence wherefrom they are derived, just as the dream table and chairs are fictitious when looked at from the broader point of view of the man who has awakened with the dawn.
