Those who see me ruling the cosmos, who see me in the adhibhuta, the adhidaiva, and the adhiyajna, are conscious of me even at the time of death.
The Lord is the supreme poet, the first cause, the sovereign ruler, subtler than the tiniest particle, the support of all, inconceivable, bright as the sun, beyond darkness.
Remembering me at the time of death, close down the doors of the senses and place the mind in the heart. Then, while absorbed in meditation, focus all energy upwards to the head. Repeating in this state the divine name, the syllable Om that represents the changeless Brahman, you will go forth from the body and attain the supreme goal.
I am easily attained by the person who always remembers me and is attached to nothing else. Such a person is a true yogi, Arjuna.
Every creature in the universe is subject to rebirth, Arjuna, except the one who is united with me.
The six months of the northern path of the sun, the path of light, of fire, of day, of the bright fortnight, leads knowers of Brahman to the supreme goal. The six months of the southern path of the sun, the path of smoke, of night, of the dark fortnight, leads other souls to the light of the moon and to rebirth.
Under my watchful eye, the laws of nature take their course. Thus is the world set in motion; thus the animate and the inanimate are created.
I am the ritual and the sacrifice; I am true medicine and the mantram. I am the offering and the fire which consumes it, and the one to whom it is offered.

Those who follow the rituals given in the Vedas, who offer sacrifices and take soma, free themselves from evil and attain the vast heaven of the gods, where they enjoy celestial pleasures. When they have enjoyed these fully, their merit is exhausted and they return to this land of death. Thus observing Vedic rituals but caught in an endless chain of desires, they come and go.
Those who worship me and meditate on me constantly, without any other thought – I will provide for all their needs.
Those who worship the devas will go to the realm of the devas; those who worship their ancestors will be united with them after death. Those who worship phantoms will become phantoms, but my devotees will come to me. Fill your mind with me; love me; serve me; worship me always. Seeking me in your heart, you will, at last, be united with me.

The limitation of the Long Path is that it is concerned only with thinning down, weakening, and reducing the ego's strength. It is not concerned with totally deflating the ego.
Since this can be done only by studying the ego's nature metaphysically, seeing its falsity, and recognizing its illusoriness, which is not even done by the Short Path, then all the endeavours of the Short Path to practise self-identification with the Overself are merely using imagination and suggestion to create a new mental state that, while imitating the Overself's state, does not actually transcend the ego-mind but exists within it still.
So a third phase becomes necessary, the phase of getting rid of the ego altogether; this can be done only by the final dissolving operation of Grace, which the man has to request and to which he has to give his consent.
To summarize the entire process, the Long Path leads to the Short Path, and the Short Path leads to the Grace of an unbroken egoless consciousness.

' The Mystical Death '...
The truth of your own nature, the mystics all testify, is that you are nothing, which reveals that you are everything. In your deepest essence, you are identical with God or ultimate reality. Your real Life is the birthless and deathless Life of God, and the Life of God embraces the whole of creation. But as long as your identity is centered in the limited life of the ego, you cannot live in full consciousness of this Life. Thus, you must die to your self-centered life in order to awaken into the Life of God.

As Rumi says, “You want Reality unmasked? Choose death! Not the death that drags you to the tomb—the death that is a transmutation, so you at last change into the Light” (Rumi, Odes). Or, as Jesus says, “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it” (Matt. 16:25-26). Thus, the genuine mystic lives in and as God only insofar as the life in and as the ego is dead.

It is the ego’s delusion of grandeur that imagines you can escape suffering and attain immortality, when in fact your life centered in the ego must be completely sacrificed in the mystical death. Any teacher or teaching that is not clear about this just feeds the ego’s propensity for megalomania and self-deception. The genuine mystical path involves the perpetual surrender and sacrifice of all self-centered egoistic activity, up to and including the complete sacrifice of ego-centered life itself. Thus all genuine mysticism teaches the cultivation of selflessness, love, and compassion........from integralscience.org

I remember the first time I had this astonishing experience.
