The ego keeps

the attention directed outward

because the ego knows that

if attention is directed inward

the ego will be found to be a myth,

and that if that inward attention is sustained

eventually the ego illusion will end.

Thus, in order to preserve the illusion

that the ego is the self,

the ego keeps the attention directed outward.
